Once again, The UPLB Genetics Society gears up as it hosts another installment of the much-awaited National Intercollegiate Genetics Quiz Contest (NIGQC) to be held on November 4, at the Umali Auditorium, SEARCA-UPLB. With the theme, “Mapping Molecular Traces: Decoding Forensic Mysteries through Modern Genetic Breakthroughs”, NIGQC 2017 will dig deep into the forensic applications of Genetics and provide a plethora of exciting developments in the said field.

NIGQC is an annual competition sponsored by The UPLB Genetics Society, open to all undergraduate students all over the country under degree programs such as (but not limited to) B.S. Biology, B.S. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, B.S. Biochemistry, and B.S. Agriculture. For the past years, NIGQC has featured topics relevant to pressing societal issues and in line with the organization’s objective of promoting awareness and creative appreciation of the genetic sciences and its potential contribution to nation-building.

The 8th NIGQC will highlight the emerging science of Forensic Genetics and its timely relevance in current issues in the Philippines. Also part of the program is a talk on the importance of genetics as a powerful tool in aiding judiciary and legislative processes by Dr. Ma. Corazon de Ungria, Head of the DNA Analysis Laboratory in U.P. Diliman and an honorary member of GeneSoc.

Last year, Ateneo De Manila University defended their championship title against other 12 participating schools, followed by UP Manila and UP Baguio, grabbing the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively. It was also during the 7th NIGQC when the organizers introduced the Genetic Drift round, a new twist in the mechanics of the quiz contest. This year, Leann Suiton, the Steering Committee Head of NIGQC 2017 promises “a one-of-a-kind quiz contest with twists and thrills that will surely excite the participants”.

Already included in the roster of registered participants are: UP Manila, University of San Agustin, Ateneo De Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Sta. Mesa, UP Baguio, Far Eastern University, Ateneo De Zamboanga University, Bulacan State University, Southern Luzon State University, Xavier University and De La Salle-Lipa.
